"Our little vacations are piling up, aren’t they? Well, when we moved to the unspoiled Atlantic coast of Spain we felt we’d get a lot of visitors. It’s worked, which has led to more time away from the website. One friend has been here six times already, another one five times. Today yet another pair arrives, but this time they’re PI-1’s high school pals, staying for nine days. We’ll be spending some time with them, but also bowing out for part of the visit. Not only is it the right thing to do to reduce male energy for their special time, but no sane person would want to get in the way of this group anyway, trust us. Their laughs alone turn heads, launch birds into the sky, and send skittish cats scrambling across the tiles. So while the girls are laying waste to the Spanish coast and a couple of its Andalusian enclaves, we’ll make time for a quick jaunt to the north. Where? The intermission card tells the tale. We’ll be back in five days, and at that point we’ll fit in some posts while hanging with the girls."
"Originally published in 1937, with this Fontana edition appearing in 1960 fronted by Eileen Walton cover art, Death on the Nile was Agatha Christie’s twenty-fifth novel (if we counted correctly). It stars her quirky franchise sleuth Hercule Poirot, and we blazed though it. More than anything it’s exhibit A for why Christie was so popular. Not only are her characters and action extremely interest sustaining, but because she’d traveled widely in Africa and the Middle East with her archaeologist husband Max Mallowan, the setting along the Nile between the Egyptian village of Shellal and the Nubian town of Wadi Halfa is very assured."
"In the story, beautiful, popular, intelligent, and greatly desired twenty-year-old Linnet Ridgeway steals the fiancée of one of her best friends Jacqueline de Bellefort, and starts a chain of events that leads to Jacqueline stalking Linnet across the planet, even to the backwaters of Nubia. The anger between Jaqueline and Linnet flows both ways, as does resentment between other characters too. It makes for a fraught cruise up the river with about a dozen passengers on the steamer Karnak. Someone’s surely going to be killed—but who, when, how, and—most importantly to Poirot, caught in this mess when all he’d wanted was to vacation—by whom?"
